Based in Hartford, CT, Hartford Investment Management Company (HIMCO) is looking for an Associate Trader to support the fixed income and equity trading groups.  The successful candidate must have the ability to be a value-added partner with the existing traders, portfolio managers and analysts throughout the investment process.  This individual will also focus on analysis supporting the derivative efforts. This role helps align strategy and execution by applying Lean and systems thinking approaches to strategy and investment funding, Agile portfolio operations, and governance. Supports the prioritization of work and financial accountability for the products and solutions in a portfolio. Coordinate, sustain, and improve value streams. Plan and monitor IT budgets to ensure alignment with strategic initiatives and or objectives. Forecast future budget needs, measure portfolio performance, and coordinate required compliance activities.

This role will have a Hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in an office location 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).


  • Partners with all roles within the LPM function as necessary to support organizational agility and maximizing business outcomes while implementing LPM strategies
  • Assists in supporting 1 LPM Pillars to ensure solutions will deliver the business vision
  • Makes trade-off decisions within team with oversight
  • Strategy & Investment Funding:
  • Supports Portfolio and Value Streams design
  • Supports investment prioritization and mix across Business and IT
  • Supports the multiyear roadmap balances business and IT strategies and priorities
  • Assists with continuous compliance with audit, regulatory, and non-discretionary needs
  • Agile Portfolio Operations:
  • Provides support for Portfolio Kanban to balance and manage Business and IT portfolio mix
  • Enables support for maintaining healthy, sustainable Portfolio backlogs, visualize and limit Work in Process (WIP), reduce batch sizes, and improve release time/ frequency/quality
  • Provides support to schedule and prepare health reviews, scorecards, risks, MORs
  • Lean Governance:
  • Informs how to continuously improves Portfolio ways of working, practices, and flow
  • Accountable for stewarding use of Rally and Clarity, including and data management
  • Supports guardrails to support dynamic financials, performance, compliance, or delivery

Financial Accountabilities:

  • Assists with department financials, including outlook locks, op planning, monthly reserving, capitalization, financial reporting supporting the CIO and business as needed, and various related items e.g. expense approver.
  • Supports vendor management, including contracts, Purchase Orders, MBM, invoice approvals.
  • Partners with LPM team to champion the finance evolution to Agile – funding value streams, product vs. project mindset, and actively uses Agile estimation

Workforce Accountabilities:

  • Assists in accurate, real-time workforce data capture, metrics, measurement, ratios, projections
  • Reports current and target team compositions, and path forward via hiring and other levers
  • Participates in required or needed training, continuous learning activities, participates in CoP
  • Supports lean principles and a continuous improvement and innovation culture


  • Bachelor’s degree or 2-4 years of experience in product ownership, digital, technology, or related field, typically towards higher end of range
  • Continuous learner mindset with understanding of agile methodologies and frameworks (SAFe, Scrum, Kanban, XP, etc) and agile tools (e.g., Rally, JIRA, ADO)
  • Experience with M365 (Excel, PPT, Teams, etc)
  • Ability to understand business acumen, to support portfolio strategies with overall business goals
  • Understands financial management, budgeting, forecasting, cost optimization, or capitalization
  • Ability to Influence, build strong partnerships
  • Ability to understanding Agile financials and understands matrixed IT financial management practices
  • Proven experience working on teams
  • Strong self-motivation, collaboration and influence skills and experience in managing and negotiating with multiple stakeholders and priorities to achieve objectives
  • Open-minded, flexible mindset to work in a matrixed environment
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal effectiveness skills, with the ability understand audiences, tailor messages and influence outcomes over discrete activities
  • Willingness to attend an LPM CoP, and enhancing portfolio maturity (e.g. hiring, upskilling)
  • Willingness to learn about ADKAR or other change management frameworks
  • Knowledge of software development to understand team impacts and fundamentals of iterative, incremental development in an organization


The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition.

The annualized base pay range for this role is: $77,520 – $116,280
