The Managing Director, Head of Trading, will be a thought leader in the investment team, responsible for designing and implementing AIMCo’s centralized execution function across the total portfolio. This senior role will oversee all trading activity and trading personnel at AIMCo and reports directly to the Senior Managing Directors of both Public Equities and Fixed Income.

This role is integral in the total portfolio management investment decision making process. The successful candidate will be a market expert who will interact seamlessly with asset class heads, product teams and will provide strategic direction for the trading process and relationships with counterparties. The head of trading will be responsible for implementing and delivering best execution service across Equities, Fixed Income, FX and related derivatives. They will measure trading effectiveness through full oversight of trade cost analysis and interpretation, including process enhancements; engagement with buy side and sell side peers on capital markets activities, regulatory developments, and market structure; and will collaborate harmoniously with investment and risk management teams, and other senior investment professionals to distill concurrent information into tradeable, value additive strategies on behalf of clients.Responsibilities Include:

  • Developing AIMCo’s centralized execution framework to enhance efficiency and cross-asset class
  • Commitment to best execution, and market intelligence delivery within and by the trading team, additive to portfolios managers’ investment decision making processes.
  • Design and implementation of a standardized transaction cost analysis platform, overseeing analysis on transaction costs and further optimizing trading activity
  • Achieving effective trade execution while adhering to AIMCo’s Best Execution policy
  • Responsible to the Investment Committee and the Derivative and Trade Management subcommittee regarding market structure and regulatory changes affecting AIMCo portfolios
  • Contributing to the Tactical Risk Allocation Committee decision making and implementation process.
  • Providing mentorship to Trading Desk team, as well as those on other teams and collaborating on total portfolio investments.
  • Utilizing a strong and broad network to collaborate and help make sound decisions
  • Exercising judgment when evaluating market developments as they relate to exposures within asset classes and for the AIMCo total portfolio
  • Ensuring internal and external regulatory compliance and alignment with internal limits and risk parameters with regards to trading activity
  • Providing strategic direction and acting as a key liaison between AIMCo and external partners, working closely with the Strategic Partnerships Team

Our Ideal Candidate:

  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in trading Global capital markets, market structure, and investment management
  • 10+ years demonstrated track record in leadership roles, as well as trade implementation across asset classes and multiple portfolio approaches
  • Knowledge and application of portfolio management and risk management concepts with a strong attention to detail
  • Strong knowledge in listed and OTC products and related derivatives.
  • Extensive knowledge of international equity/fixed income and related products
  • Strong familiarity with and strategic approach to Bloomberg, Capital IQ, Charles River, Calypso and other electronic and direct market access platforms and their integration with other investment management systems as AIMCo undergoes transformation of various systems and workflow
  • Advanced knowledge of regulatory environment, including proposed changes to market frameworks across jurisdictions.
  • Excellent strategic thinking, organization, and communication skills, as the role supports multiple investment teams across asset classes.
  • Flexibility to adapt as the Trading team evolves to fit AIMCo’s needs.
  • Effective negotiating and collaboration
  • Dynamic, results oriented, and takes initiative with the ability to work collaboratively and autonomously.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
  • Post-secondary degree in a relevant field along with a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation
  • Demonstrated commitment to AIMCo’s core values of excellence, transparency, humility, integrity, and collaboration, and inspires the same in others.

Success Factors:

Within the first year, the successful incumbent will plan and begin implementation of AIMCo’s proforma centralized execution function. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to work independently, but also collaborate with other team members and senior leaders where required. The Managing Director, Head of Trading is a thought leader within the organization, so success means scaling that capability across a diverse array of investment strategies and products.
