Job Description

Global Retirement Data & Analytics covers Canada, U.S. and Hong Kong Retirement business units.

Manulife Financial/John Hancock is a leading international financial services group that helps people make their decisions easier and lives better. Global Retirement is a predominant business line within Global Wealth and Asset Management, accounting for about 60% of GWAM earnings. Our retirement solutions focus on the plan sponsor, participant and business partner experience in the design and administration of our client’s pension plans and individual accounts within pension plan rollover products.

The opportunity

The role will be primarily responsible to centralize, increase data oversight and develop analytics to support new actuarial modeling of investment products such as the John Hancock Stable Value Guaranteed Income Fund (“SVF”) and existing modeling for the Retirement Group Annuity Platform.  The role, of the Manager, Global Retirement Data & Analytics, Investment Products will report into the Director of Knowledge Development, and will work closely with US Retirement Business, Functional and IT Teams along with a Model Lead from the Shared Service Liability Model Team to organize, oversee, troubleshoot, and deliver data to be used in developing and maintaining actuarial models. Secondary responsibilities will include to build commentary-based insight reports for investment products to help provide strategic analysis that make impactful profitable growth-oriented decisions.  The Global Retirement Data & Analytics team is a story telling shop, facilitating the organic development of knowledge to support Global Retirement in being critical, adaptive, and innovative through data driven decisions.


  • Expertise in sourcing, organizing, and delivering data for our core US Retirement and Investment Products.
  • Source data for new and existing requirements for actuarial modeling and any US Retirements data related projects for the stable value funds, the Retirement Platform or other projects.
  • Leverage core data to support business leadership in making data driven decisions.
  • Understanding the business and meaning of the source data fields including over time becoming a stable value data subject matter expert and a source of knowledge for reporting metrics.
  • Accountable for regular commentary-based reporting and analysis on investment products.
  • Work close with a Model Lead on how to structure the values to provide in each model field.
  • Support reporting and business functions due to data needs and troubleshoot any deficiencies.
  • Support the global data community to align with and share standard processes.
  • Manage / Prioritize reporting activities throughout the quarter.
  • May require taking on project management responsibilities.

What we are looking for

  • 5+ years of experience of working with various data architectures.
  • A bachelor’s degree preferably in Business, Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics or a related field.
  • Designation such as CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst), CAA (Chartered Asset Allocator), MBA, Master of Management Analytics an asset.
  • Ability to learn/translate (understands actuarial and IT languages and concepts).
  • Knowledge of Retirement business (401k plans) and investments would be an asset.
  • Good understanding of data sources, data transformations, and optimal data storage practices.
  • Experience with actuarial model building would be a plus.
  • Preferred that the candidate has knowledge of other technical applications, including SQL, Python, and Power BI.
  • Project Management experience
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills with an ability to mine and extract financial & non-financial data, and derive insights from complex information.
  • Good presentation, business writing and experience performing detailed analysis and communicating results on a deadline.
  • Strong leadership, teamworking and collaboration skills.
  • Advanced level of proficiency in MS Excel and other MS office tools (e.g. Word and PowerPoint to develop reports, documents and presentations).
