The Public School Employees’ Retirement System (PSERS) is a pension fund for public school employees in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Eligible members include all full-time public school employees, part-time hourly public school employees who render at least 500 hours of service in the school year, and part-time per diem public school employees who render at least 80 days of service in the school year in any of the 775 reporting entities in Pennsylvania. As of June 30, 2020, the System had nearly 256,000 active, 240,000 retired, and 26,000 vested inactive members, with an estimated annual active payroll of $14 billion. We are looking for a Junior Investment Professional to join our Market Risk team at PSERS.

The Pennsylvania Public School Employees’ Retirement System (PSERS,, is an agency in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania that administers the pension plan for Pennsylvania’s public school employees. The mission of PSERS is to maintain a financially sound system that supports over a half million members with a current pension fund of approximately $70 billion. This position will play a contributing part in ensuring PSERS fulfills its mission and values.

PSERS is located in Harrisburg, PA, a mid-size city situated along the Susquehanna River. Teleworking is optional, with an occasional need to report to the Harrisburg office as operationally necessary. If requesting to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and be located in Pennsylvania. The Harrisburg area is affordable and near many attractions including Hershey, and it is only two hours from major cities and airports like Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington D.C.


This broadly focused risk management analyst position will assist the PSERS Investment Office in analyzing and monitoring complex investment exposures and risks for PSERS’ entire investment program. The incumbent will provide critical support to the holistic evaluation of investment risks on a subset of specific strategies, individual portfolios, asset classes, and the plan overall. Working with other members of the team, this individual will discuss risk matters with the broader Investment Office and help with the messaging of risk matters in general.

Work Schedule and Additional Information: 

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday – Friday, with 60-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, dependent on operational and executive leadership requirements. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg.

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree; or four years performing relevant investment operations or investment risk work; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Successful completion of any of the following professional accreditations may be substituted for relevant work experience:
    • Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA): 1 year per level passed
    • Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA): 1 year
    • Financial Risk Manager (FRM): 1 year per level passed
    • Professional Risk Manager (PRM): 1 year
    • Certified Securities Operations Professional (CSOP): 1 year (only applicable to Operations positions)
    • Certified Treasury Professional (CTP): 1 year (only applicable to Operations positions)

Additional Requirements:

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

Preferred Qualifications (not required):

  • Bachelor’s degree with a concentration in the areas of finance, mathematics, statistics, actuarial science, data science, or economics.
  • Completed college coursework or have work experience in performing relevant investment risk analysis or management work.
  • Completed college coursework or have work experience using any investment risk systems or models.
  • Have one year or more of experience using Microsoft Excel or comparable spreadsheet program.
