What You’ll Do

Syntrinsic, now an IMA company, is currently seeking a Head of Investment Research to lead the Syntrinsic Internal Investment Committee (SIC). The position reports directly to the Co-President and leads a team of researchers responsible for both economic research and investment manager due diligence. Economic research informs the crafting of long-term capital market assumptions as well as near-term market views. Manager research coverage extends across traditional equity and fixed income asset classes as well as private equity, private debt, real assets, and hedge fund strategies. Together, these elements provide actionable input into the construction of client portfolios and ensure high quality of proprietary investment research.

The responsibilities of this position are varied and include at least the following:

Investment Committee Leadership

  • Leading Syntrinsic’s internal Investment Committee as well as serving as a voting member.
  • Overseeing the refinement and implementation of the Syntrinsic Investment Policy Statement.
  • Developing and managing SIC’s investment process, procedures, and evaluation.
  • Working with firm leadership to oversee hiring, training, and supervising the firm’s analysts.

Investment Manager Research

  • Sourcing, prioritizing, and maintaining a pipeline of investment opportunities and funds– both traditional and impact—that will provide a strategic advantage to Syntrinsic’s client’s portfolios.
  • Monitoring performance, portfolio positions, current events, and organizational changes of existing investment managers and completing analytical reviews to evaluate the relative performance of each fund on a regular basis.
  • Preparing and presenting recommendations regarding new investment opportunities to the SIC for approval. Supporting the firm’s analysts in doing the same.
  • Cultivating and maintaining relationships with leading investment thinkers, including individual managers and a national network of colleagues within the investment community to stay abreast of emerging trends and issues.

Portfolio Construction

  • Maintaining and articulating a thorough understanding and timely awareness of investment matters such as, portfolio development, asset allocation theory, and geopolitical, economic, and behavioral events and their impact on investment portfolios and the markets.
  • Overseeing development of the firm’s Capital Markets Forecast, Long-Term Assumptions, and Near-Term Sentiment and Themes.
  • Constructively developing and reviewing asset allocation strategies and portfolio construction designed to meet client needs.
  • Interpret and incorporate ESG and impact directives and strategies into client’s investment portfolios.

Collaboration & Culture

  • Collaborating closely with client-facing teams, analysts, and other stakeholders to ensure alignment of research efforts with overall client objectives.
  • Maintaining strong relationships with industry experts, peers, and other external sources to gather valuable market intelligence.
  • Overseeing the production and presentation of high-quality research reports, whitepapers, and other thought leadership materials to enhance the firm’s market presence and credibility.
  • Coaching and mentoring staff as part of building and maintaining a culture of positive employee relationships, organizational effectiveness, and strong client relationships.

You Should Have:

  • Proven track record of success institutional research and portfolio management. Ideally 15 – 20 years industry experience.
  • Experience with senior level client engagement in a research capacity with strong presentation skills.
  • Solid understanding of sustainable and ESG research processes and have a strong interest.
  • Previous experience in public-facing responsibilities.
  • Substantial experience in authoring client facing research across asset classes, macroeconomics, investment management and portfolio construction.
  • Independent thinking, pragmatic problem-solving skills and effective decision making.
  • Strong academic credentials are required; an MBA, PhD and/or CFA is strongly preferred.

While this is the targeted range, final offer amounts will depend on a variety of factors, including the candidate’s geographic location, prior relevant experience, and their knowledge, skills, and abilities.
