THIS ROLE HAS BEEN FILLED

The Vice President, Chief Investment Officer (VP/CIO) develops and communicates investment strategy and policies, contributes to business strategy, manages and develops the investment team, supervises and oversees the investment process and establishes processes to ensure investment policies are followed, and makes decisions on asset allocation, selection of external managers, and risk management across portfolios.

 The VP/CIO will be responsible for deciding what amount of University Hospitals organizational operating funds may be put towards investment activity while maintaining limited overall risk to the organization. This includes tailoring the portfolio of investments in order to create a desirable balance between risks and return.

The VP/CIO faces high expectations regarding the performance of the investments. The VP/CIO will be responsible to manage UH’s investment portfolio within the context of its overall financial performance and risk tolerance.  This includes managing the tradeoff between acceptable levels of risk and maximizing rates of return, even in challenging market cycles, where capital markets can experience high volatility.

VP/CIO is responsible for establishing investment strategies that are best for University Hospital organizational goals against the backdrop of its Strategic Financial Plan and current operating cash flow needs.

The VP/CIO is also responsible for managing the Pension Plan investments consistent with ERISA prudent investor rules and with the context of overall UH financial performance.  Additional responsibilities include managing the Endowment funds of UH consistent with the Uniform Prudent Management of Investment Funds Act “UPMIFA”

Qualifications

Education.

  • Bachelor Degree Required
  • Master’s of Business Administration preferred
  • CFA/CAIA or progress towards these designations preferred
  • Relevant investment management experience may serve as a substitute for the above

Experience & Knowledge:

  • Minimum of 8-10 years of relevant job experience
  • 5 + years of management experience required
  • Experience and knowledge of:

1)            Asset allocation

2)            Capital markets functioning

3)            Investment performance measurement (GIPS)

4)            Investment manager selection and due diligence

5)            Risk and statistical modeling

6)            Bond pricing/trading

Special Skills & Equipment Knowledge:

  • Securities trading experience a plus
  • Excel modeling
  • Communication skills are vital for VP/CIO to be able to make strategies and expectations clear to board members and other key stakeholders.
  • Excellent quantitative skills and advanced PC skills (especially in Excel) required.
