Job Summary
The Chief Investment Officer is an at-will executive leadership position that reports directly to KeyBank leadership (debt fund board of directors). As the strategic investment leader of the KeyBank Debt Strategy Fund, the CIO is responsible for directing the management of the Investment Manager’s investment portfolio within the goals established by KeyBank and will have broad organizational responsibilities that generally accompany the position of the senior investment leader. The CIO is responsible for the development of an innovative, long-range and comprehensive investment vision and strategy. The CIO will primarily be held accountable for and measured by investment performance and generating returns in excess of appropriate benchmarks, while appropriately managing risks.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in creating and implementing policies and strategies in collaboration with KeyBank leadership (fund board of directors) to effectively manage the investment portfolio (debt fund) in order to enhance returns and reduce risk.
  • Implement policies and strategies to achieve the investment goals of the debt fund as set forth in the Private Placement Memorandum (PPM)
  • Execute investment-related strategies and procedures necessary for optimal investment performance and operations, including providing recommendations for changes in asset allocations.
  • Participate and maintain professional relationships with institutional investors, investment managers, advisors and internal KeyBank partners.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain portfolio strategies and processes; monitor performance, including cost, risk, cash flow, and liquidity; and collaborate with other departments, including risk, compliance, and operations.
  • Develop and maintain reporting systems, analyze the results, and present the findings in detailed reports.
  • Develop and monitor annual operating budgets, including preparing, submitting, and monitoring quarterly forecast adjustments.

  • Complies with all KeyBank policies and procedures, including without limitation, acting professionally at all times, conducting business ethically, avoiding conflicts of interest, and acting in the best interests of Key’s clients and Key.

Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree (required)
  • Master’s Degree (preferred)

Experience Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience at a large asset manager, RIA, fund company, or broker-dealer. (required)
  • Extensive experience leading an investment team, and managing asset managers, platform managers, investment strategists and consultants. (required)
  • Built or scaled an investment platform, while making decisions around a number of strategies, platform positioning for advisors/clients, and pricing (required)
  • Strong organizational skills to manage on demand requests, projects and daily duties (required)
  • Communication experience across large and small groups via all mediums, including live presentations and televised interviews (required)
  • Thorough knowledge of financial industry and financial products (required)

Licenses and Certifications

  • FINRA License S65 within 180 Days (required)
  • Certified Investment Management Analyst (CIMA) (preferred) or
  • Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) (preferred) or
  • Certified Financial Planner (CFP) (preferred)

  • Understand and interpret laws, rules and regulations governing the investment managers.
  • Interact with external service providers such as actuarial, risk and investment consultants, custodians and money managers.
  • Prepare complex correspondence, reports, and budget documents for the Board, executive staff, and managers and present it both orally and in writing so it is understood by all audience levels.
  • Understand and assess the quality, accuracy and reliability of manager and consultant reports.
  • Perform job functions independently and in an ethical and objective manner.
  • Use computer software to compose spreadsheets, presentations, graphs, flowcharts, calculations and time reports, etc.

  • Risk Management: Establishes business-specific risk management benchmarks and measures key benefits and drawbacks of risk management practices; demonstrates a strong risk management mindset

Physical Demands

  • General Office – Prolonged sitting, ability to communicate face to face in person or on the phone with teammates and clients, frequent use of PC/laptop, occasional lifting/pushing/pulling of backpacks, computer bags up to 10 lbs.

Travel

  • Routine and frequent travel to include overnight stay.

Driving Requirements

  • Ability to routinely and frequently operate a motor vehicle with a valid driver’s license.
