Job Summary

Getty is seeking to recruit an outstanding leader and investor to oversee an investment portfolio totaling $8.5 billion and an investment team of 14 professionals. Reporting to the President and CEO, the Vice President/Chief Investment Officer (CIO), along with being committed to and passionate about Getty and its mission, should be an innovative, forward-thinking leader and proven investor with a history of developing and managing a successful investment team in a collaborative style. The successful candidate should recognize and be excited about the opportunity to lead and continue to build an innovative and differentiated investment portfolio, while contributing to the growth and mission of Getty.

The CIO will have overall responsibility for implementing the investment objectives and policies as established by Getty’s Board of Trustees’ Investment Committee in conjunction with the CIO. They will be responsible for the overall management of Getty’s investment portfolio, Investment Committee relations and investment office personnel.

Major Job Responsibilities

  • Guiding all aspects of Getty’s investment objectives, policies, and processes as established by the Investment Committee
  • Setting an optimized asset allocation and managing the portfolio in a manner consistent with Getty’s liquidity needs
  • Sourcing, evaluating, and executing all investment strategies, including overseeing the selection and monitoring of external investment managers, and oversight of all investment activities
  • Conducting thorough due diligence on the most compelling prospective opportunities including analysis of investment strategy, process, organization, portfolio positions and performance
  • Monitoring performance, portfolio positions, current events, and organizational changes of the invested fund managers and completing analytical reviews to evaluate the relative performance of each fund manager on a regular basis
  • Staying abreast of market conditions and developments that may affect Getty’s investment holdings and strategies, and acting proactively and appropriately to protect those interests
  • Providing regular reports to the Investment Committee regarding activity, opportunities, performance, and peer comparative data
  • Regularly reporting investment results to the Investment Committee; informing and educating the Investment Committee regarding potential investment strategies and changes in the portfolio
  • Seeking the Investment Committee’s advice and counsel regarding major aspects of investment activities
  • Leveraging established networks as well as the Committee’s extensive global networks, when appropriate, to develop and maintain relationships with the outside investment community to expand staff’s knowledge regarding investment opportunities
  • Providing overall leadership, oversight, and management of the activities of the investment staff, including managing a $409M annual budget; teaching, coaching, evaluating, and providing feedback to improve performance and develop employees’ potential; provide clear goals with respect to portfolio and individual performance as tied to incentives
  • Providing oversight of all investment operations including all back- and mid-office office processes and the internal and external resources required to support the investment office
  • Acting as a liaison to Getty’s executive leadership team on market and investment trends that may impact the overall balance sheet or income statement; being a collaborative partner with Getty executives to achieve strategic priorities and align with policy/administration facets of Getty
  • Demonstrating by example high levels of ethics, professionalism, collaboration, and teamwork with all Getty administrative, leadership and investment staff


The successful candidate will possess a distinguished track record as a senior investor at an endowment, foundation, hospital system, family office or related investment platform. They will have a demonstrated record of investment and relevant work experience which includes third-party manager evaluation and direct managerial experience; proven ability to drive a team to achieve common goals and create opportunities for growth and development; and a commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working environment.

  • An established investment performance history and commitment to achieving excellence in investment performance, plus a reputation for sound investment judgment and risk management
  • Proven team-builder, mentor and communicator
  • Ability to portray Getty as a desired investor to top tier investment managers and to access his/her independent network for manager evaluation and reference checking purposes
  • Capacity to think creatively and explore themes and identify managers which are unique
  • A broad understanding of portfolio theory, asset allocation, and portfolio construction
