The CalSTRS Investments Branch is seeking an experienced individual to work as a(n) Associate Portfolio Manager on the Fixed Income team.


The Fixed Income Unit is dedicated to maximizing risk-adjusted total return within a multi-asset class portfolio. They provide value through innovative/active asset allocation and bond selection by taking advantage of internally and externally managed strategies. The fixed income portfolio is managed using both enhanced and active strategies. In addition, several portfolios and programs including Treasury Inflation Protected Securities , RMS Long Duration Treasuries, Cash Management, Securities Lending and Currency Management reside within the Fixed Income unit.


Under the general direction of the Portfolio Manager, the Associate Portfolio Manager is responsible for participating in the day-to-day management and implementation of private credit investment strategies within Fixed Income. The incumbent is expected to perform the most complex duties requiring the highest degree of competence, independence, confidentiality, and discretionary judgement. The position requires the ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a diverse team.

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills:

  • Broad and extensive experience in investment management working for a major financial institution or governmental agency.
  • Experience working with private credit, alternative investments or similar.
  • Experience leading a team.
  • Ability to draft board agenda items and memos.
  • Ability to work cross functionally with other CalSTRS asset classes.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with internal employees and external investment managers.
  • Ability to adapt to changes in priorities, assignments, and other interruptions which may impact pre-established timelines and courses of action.
  • Ability to foster diversity and inclusion and empower a team to achieve professional growth and business objectives.
  • Ability to demonstrate a high degree of initiative, professionalism, confidentiality, and ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment.

This position is eligible for incentive compensation and has a maximum incentive opportunity of 50% of base salary.

An incumbent who possesses a professional certification in one of the following designations: Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM), Financial Risk Manager (FRM), Certified Investment Management Analyst (CIMA) or Chartered Alternative Investment Analysts (CAIA) may receive a 5% monthly base pay differential. Only one 5% base pay differential is eligible regardless of the number of certifications.
