Lilly’s Pension Benefit Investment Team (‘PBI’) within Global Treasury, provides critical investment strategy and implementation, fiduciary oversight, controllership, cash management and maintains direct responsibility for regulatory and financial reporting for the U.S. benefit plans. These plans include significant assets and exposures, liabilities and the related operations and transactions for Lilly’s U.S. and Puerto Rico employee pension, savings, retirement health and active employee welfare plan benefits.

Operational/Compliance Support –

  • Develop, implement and document fiduciary oversight and operational processes and controls, including those driven by changes in the regulatory environment and evolving industry best practices, for example, conducting the Section 408(b)(2) (fee disclosure) periodic reviews
  • Lead Fair Market Value (FMV) analysis and review for all private holdings (175+) as part of the Retirement Plan and Retiree Health Plan financial statement preparation/audit
  • Lead year end asset leveling process for the Form 10-K pension footnote
  • Lead review and preparation of audit procedures required for Alternative Investments, driven by the “Critical Audit Matter” (‘CAM’) assessment by EY for Lilly’s annual company audit and Form 10-K filing
  • Coordinate all tax-related filings and compliance with guidance from third-party tax provider and third-party trustee/custodian and keeping abreast of industry best practices
  • Provide backup on all Operations, Controllership, Auditing and Regulatory Processes in the team for both the Controller and the Assistant Controller
  • Lead compliance and operational aspects for the Savings Plan Master Trust, including review of monthly disbursement reconciliation between custodian and administrator, analysis and recommendation of annual accrual setting and preparation of required disclosures
  • Direct and review project work completed by the Assistant Controller, including the annual benchmarking survey and fiduciary liability application and presentation. Present findings and related recommendations to governance committee
  • Build and maintain an annual Operations and Middle Office Deliverable Calendar

Middle Office Support –

  • Review/approve investment manager fees for payment to public equity and fixed income managers, resolve discrepancies and advise Executive Director of Investments
  • Develop broad understanding of operational due diligence practices/regulations/expectations in the industry with investment managers, peers, legal experts and regulatory advice and determine if any enhancements/steps should be added to current team procedures and documentation
  • Lead and manage cybersecurity assessments of all plan providers, in coordination with Lilly Legal, Procurement, IT and other partners
  • Become backup team expert (behind Senior Director) on all accounting and regulatory actuarial measures, forecasts, sensitivities and potential implications
  • Lead annual collection and review of affiliate pension data for compliance with Lilly Financial Policy 2L
  • Actively support record retention initiatives to drive efficiency, and own/lead document retention for public equity and fixed income managers for all plans and trusts
  • Complete other special projects, as needed

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field or graduate degree (MBA, MS, etc.) with Finance/Accounting focus.
  • Minimum 5 years of collective experience in accounting or finance
  • Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to be employed in the United States. Lilly does not anticipate providing sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H-1B or TN status) for this employment position.

  • External relationship management, due diligence, negotiation and contracting
  • External focus in the development of peer relationships, deeply learning about the industry and best practices
  • Knowledge of benefit plans (strategic and operational), trustee/custodian management, fiduciary/ regulatory/tax issues
  • Familiarity with actuarial concepts and fiduciary governance and/or actuarial or investment certifications (e.g., CFA, CAIA, or EA)
